Byers has worked in a variety of sports during his career as a play-by-play broadcaster. The 2014-15 season will be his 13th as a play-by-play broadcaster for a professional hockey team. He served as the voice of the Oklahoma City Blazers from 2005-09. His hockey career has also seen him work for the Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League. The 11-year voice of the Oklahoma City RedHawks, Byers spent the first 15 years of his career calling horse races at Remington Park and Hollywood Park. While working at Remington Park in the early 1990s, Byers also spent time as a linesman in the CHL. The Chicago native came to Oklahoma City from Los Angeles in 1988 as the track announcer for Remington Park.

In addition to providing the play-by-play for all games, Byers hosts Barons Weekly on AM 1340 each Monday night during the season with coach Todd Nelson and player guests from Buffalo Wild Wings on the NW Expressway, plus the post-game call-in show following many home games. He also serves as the primary writer of game notes and provides content for the Barons' website.
