EDMONTON OILERS MAKE TWO MOVES BEFORE NHL TRADE DEADLINE
By Eric Rodgers,
The Edmonton Oilers, parent team of the Oklahoma City Barons, were relatively quiet in the eleventh hour as the 2013 NHL Trade Deadline approached. The Oilers did make two moves leading up to the deadline however. The Oilers acquired defenseman Garrett Stafford from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Dane Byers. The Oilers also acquired forward Jerred Smithson from the Florida Panthers for a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Stafford, a Los Angeles, California native, joins the organization after spending the first part of this season with the Hershey Bears. He started his professional career by spending four seasons with the Cleveland Barons, and later the Worcester Sharks, before making stops in the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars, Phoenix Coyotes, and Montreal Canadiens organizations. So far this season, Stafford has scored one goal and added 20 assists in 48 games with the Bears. Stafford has scored 93 goals and 273 assists in 658 career American Hockey League games spanning ten seasons, while scoring two assists in seven NHL appearances.
Smithson comes to the Oilers after being acquired by the Florida Panthers last season. After five seasons with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, Smithson turned pro in 2000-01 with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL. After moving back and forth between the AHL and NHL within the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators organizations, Smithson earned his stay in the NHL full-time with the Predators in 2005-06. In 35 games this season with Florida, Smithson has two goals and three assists along with ten penalty minutes. Smithson has contributed 95 career points in 578 regular season NHL games, while also adding four points in 36 career Stanley Cup Playoffs games.
The American Hockey League trade deadline is scheduled for April 10 at 2 P.M. (ct). Following the deadline, no player may be acquired via trade between member clubs, and no AHL club may accept a player on loan from a club other than its NHL affiliate.
The Barons return to action Friday night when they travel to Cedar Park Texas to take on the Texas Stars at 7:30 p.m.
