Beginning September 17, the Cox Convention Center, home of the Oklahoma City Barons, begins preparations for the 2012-13 hockey season. The preparation includes two lucky Barons fans that will assist the Cox Convention Center staff in preparing the ice surface.

Starting Sunday evening, Cox Convention Center crews begin the nearly 48-hour process to turn a bare, concrete floor into a world-class ice surface for the 2012-13 Barons hockey season. The crew begins by gradually dropping the temperature of the arena floor to the point that is can freeze a thin coat of water. Following the first application of the water Monday morning, crews from the Cox Convention Center paint the thin coat of ice white and paint the familiar markings on the ice such as faceoff circles, goal creases, blue lines and the red line. Following the painting of the lines, the crew installs the logos and continually adds layers of water to bring the ice surface to its desired thickness.

Joining the staff from the SMG building are two Barons fans that submitted their names in hopes of being chosen to help with the process.

“We wanted to give someone a unique opportunity to participate in a behind-the-scenes activity,” said Brenda Bennett, Executive Vice President of Marketing. “The response to the request for people to assist in the process was great. We’re excited to give two of our fans the opportunity to do something that not many people have ever done.”

This year provides a unique opportunity for SMG, the company that operates the Cox Convention Center. The Cox Convention Center is hosting an ice-making school for crews from SMG buildings across the country. The staffs work together to make the sheet of ice and share tips for making the process more efficient and to create the best sheet of ice possible.

The Barons home opener is October 19 against the San Antonio Rampage at the Cox Convention Center at 7 p.m. A variety of ticket packages are available to meet every individual or group need. Packages ranging from 7-game and 11-game packs to Full Season Seats are available. Call the Barons’ front office at 405-232-4625 for information on group outings, Season Seats and other ticket packages.
