TONIGHT: The Barons continue a 4-game trip with the first of two against the Charlotte Checkers (Carolina Hurricanes). OKC swept Texas on Sunday and Tuesday (7-4 and 5-2) to take the first 2 games of the trip. Overall, the Barons are on a season-high equaling 3-game winning streak. OKC has not lost since absorbing consecutive defeats to the Checkers Jan. 23-24 by 4-0 and 9-3 scores. Charlotte has lost 3 of 4 since. Charlotte has won all 6 games in the season series. The Checkers are 10th in the Western Conference with 45 points. OKC is tied for 11th in points with 44.
OFF THE TOP: The Barons have not trailed at any point during their 3-game winning streak. OKC has out-scored the opposition (Toronto once and Texas twice) 17-9 during the streak. Goaltender Richard Bachman has won all 3 games, his longest personal string of wins this season, stopping 95 of 104 shots for a .913 save percentage. OKC has scored at least 1 goal in 12 straight periods dating to a 4-0 shutout at the hands of John Muse and the Checkers Jan. 23. OKC killed off all 8 Texas power play chances in the just-concluded 2-game series (4 each game), while the Barons’ power play connected twice each game to go 4-for-8 in Cedar Park. The Barons are 7-1-0-1 when tallying more than 1 power-play goal in a game.
TWO GAMES, TWO GOALS: Mark Arcobello has a goal in each game, plus 2 assists, in his first two contests since being loaned by Edmonton on Saturday. Arcobello is the Barons’ all-time leading goal (52) and assist (85) producer. All of his prior game action this season had been with the Oilers, for whom he had 4 goals and 14 assists in 41 games. He’s the 17th player to appear for both the Barons and Oilers this season and just the second (Martin Marincin is the other) to play at least 1 regular-season game during each of the Barons’ 4 AHL seasons. After tonight, Arcobello will be required to take the NHL’s Olympic break due to the length of time he spent in the NHL this season.
CAROLINA BLUE: All-time in the regular season, OKC is 7-13-1-1 vs. Charlotte, 5-4-0-1 at TWCA.
LANDER LEADS: With a goal on Tuesday, Anton Lander surpassed former Baron Linus Omark for the team’s point lead this season with 30. Lander’s 30 points have come in 30 games spread over 3 AHL stints. He has 13 goals and 17 assists to go along with a +5 rating. Since returning from his latest stint with Edmonton Jan. 4, Lander has 4 goals and 11 assists in 12 games. He also brings a 4-game point streak into tonight, during which he’s notched 2 goals and 4 assists.
PENALTY SHOOTING: Ben Eager was awarded the Barons’ fifth penalty shot of the season in Tuesday’s 5-2 win at Texas. Eager was fouled on a breakaway 6:30 into the first period, but was denied by Josh Robinson. Only Linus Omark, who tallied twice on penalty shots, has scored for the Barons this season. Andrew Miller, Tyler Pitlick and Eager were stopped. All-time, OKC has been awarded 11 penalty shots, scoring 3 times, while opponents have taken 7 against the Barons, scoring twice. The last opposition penalty shot was by Texas’ Mike Hedden on April 14, 2012 against David LeNeveu (goal).
ODDS AND ENDS: Tyler Pitlick has missed the past 2 games with a lower body injury. He turned in back-to-back 2-point games when he last played, with 1 goal and 1 assist in each. He’s also a +2 in each of his last 2 efforts. Pitlick has 4 goals in his last 6 games and 6 goals for the season in 26 games for OKC. Pitlick’s career high is 7 goals, set in a 62-game rookie campaign in 2011-12. Brad Hunt has a 4-game point streak, during which he has 1 goal and 3 assists. Rookie defenseman Martin Gernat recorded his third 2-assist game of the season, and fourth multi-point contest, on Tuesday. Gernat has 3 goals and 12 assists in 34 games. Nine of his 12 assists have been on the road.
