TONIGHT: For the first time since Game 7 of the 2013 Western Conference Final of the Calder Cup playoffs, the Barons take on the defending AHL Champion Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit Red Wings). The Griffins overcame a 4-3 OKC lead in the third period to take that deciding game at Van Andel Arena, 5-4, before defeating Syracuse 4-2 in the Calder Cup Finals. This is first of back-to-back meetings in Grand Rapids and the first of 4 regular-season matchups. Midwest Division-leader Grand Rapids is second in the conference with 65 points. OKC is 11th with 51.
OFF THE TOP: The Barons enter tonight’s game off a 5-4 shootout loss on Saturday to the Lake Erie Monsters in Oklahoma City, a contest where OKC scored twice in the final 5:33 to force overtime. That snapped the Barons’ 6-game winning streak, which had equaled the second-longest in club history. OKC remains on a 7-game unbeaten streak, which matches the longest unbeaten run in franchise history (in the AHL, shootout losses end winning streaks, but are combined with victories to form unbeaten streaks. Only regulation and overtime losses are factored into losing streaks). The Barons have won each of their last 4 road games. A win tonight would match the longest road winning streak in club history, achieved on 3 other occasions. Goaltender Richard Bachman has started all 7 games of the unbeaten streak, going 6-0-1 with a 3.09 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in that time (233 saves on 255 shots). OKC is 11-5-0-1 since the first of the year, with 2 of those wins and 4 of the losses to the Charlotte Checkers.
HOT HANDS: Anton Lander brings an 8-game point streak into tonight, a team high this season. Linus Omark had a 7-game point streak from Nov. 21-Dec. 6. During Lander’s streak he has 5 goals and 9 assists. Lander has a team-best 38 points (16G, 22A) in 34 games over 3 AHL stints. Since returning from his latest stint with Edmonton Jan. 4, Lander has 7 goals and 16 assists in 16 games. Those 23 points tie him for the third in the AHL in points in that time span entering Monday’s games around the league. Roman Horak owns a 6-game point streak, with 6 goals and 5 assists in that span. Brad Hunt has at least 1 point in 7 of the last 8 games, collecting 2 goals and 9 assists. Hunt matched the Barons’ high for the season with 4 points on Saturday, on 1 goal and 3 assists.
ARCOBELLO RETURNS: Mark Arcobello returns to the Barons’ lineup tonight after missing the past 3 games because of the NHL’s Olympic break. Arcobello, who opened the season with Edmonton and was loaned to the Barons Feb. 1, accumulated too much NHL service time this season to be eligible to play through the break in the AHL. With the Oilers, Arcobello had 4 goals and 14 assists in 41 games. In his 3 games with OKC before the break, Arcobello had a goal in each contest and added 4 assists for 7 points. Arcobello finished last season tied for third in the AHL in points with 68. He’s the Barons’ all-time leading goal (53) and assist (87) producer.
BARONS-GRIFFINS: All-time in the regular season, the Barons are 8-4-0-4 against the Griffins, 3-2-0-3 at Van Andel Arena. In last spring’s playoffs, the Barons went 2-2 at Grand Rapids and 1-2 in OKC.
SPECIAL TEAMS TRENDS: During the Barons’ 7-game unbeaten streak, the power play is 11-for-31, 35.5 percent. OKC went 3-for-4 on the power play on Saturday against Lake Erie. The penalty kill is 19-for-20 in the past 6 games and 23-for-26 (88.5) during the 7-game unbeaten streak.
