TONIGHT: The Barons return from a 4-day break to face the Texas Stars (Dallas Stars) for the third straight game, this time at Cedar Park Center. The clubs split 2 games last Friday and Saturday at the Cox Center, with OKC winning most recently 6-2 on Saturday. The Barons lead the 12-game season series 3-1. They won the only previous game played at Cedar Park, 6-4, on Nov. 21. The Barons are 4th in the South Division and tied for 8th in the Western Conference with 32 points. Texas, which lost in OT 4-3 in Houston last night, has 35 points, 5th in the conference.
OFF THE TOP: The Barons have out-scored their opposition in the first period 37-23, totaling the most first-period goals in the AHL this season. The Barons have had a lead or tie at the first intermission in 12 straight games, during which they are 5-5-0-2. The last time OKC trailed after 1 period was Nov. 21 at Texas, when the Stars led 3-1 after 20 minutes in an eventual 6-4 OKC win. The Barons matched their season high for goals in a period, and equaled the league mark for tallies in the first period, by opening a 4-0 lead over Texas in the first 20 minutes on Saturday.
STAR GAZING: The Barons are 15-7-0-2 all-time against the Stars, with a 7-4-0-0 mark at Cedar Park Center. On Saturday, OKC snapped a Texas string of standing points in 8 straight, but the Stars have a point in 9 of their last 10 straight (6-1-2-1), 13 of 15 (9-2-3-1) and 17 of 19. The Stars are 12-3-3-2 dating to a shootout loss Nov. 10 vs. Lake Erie after opening the season 3-6-0-0. The Barons have dealt the Stars 2 of their 3 regulation losses over the past 19 games.
HOMEBODIES: The Barons are 9-4-1-1 at home, a .667 standing point percentage that is tied for fifth in the AHL with the Portland Pirates. OKC’s 20 home standing points are fifth. Jordan Eberle has 11 goals and 16 assists at home in 15 games played. Eberle would be tied for 14th in the league in points with 27 if only his home stats were considered. Justin Schultz has accumulated 10 goals and 15 assists in 15 home contests. The Barons are 5-6-0-2 on the road and winless in their last 5 away from home at 0-3-0-2.
BARONS AT 99: The Barons’ 6-2 win on Saturday was the 99th in franchise history. OKC has a record in nearly 2 1/2 AHL seasons of 99-61-7-17.
LIZON ADDED: The Barons signed RW Erick Lizon to a PTO today. Lizon, 27, has spent the past season and a half with the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League. Lizon, who spent the 2007-08 season with OKC’s former CHL club, has 3 assists and 71 penalty minutes in 24 games this season.
EBERLE AND SCHULTZ TOP CHARTS: Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz share the AHL point lead with 40. Eberle tops the league with 19 goals. He was the CCM/AHL Player of the Month for November. Eberle enters tonight second in the AHL in shooting percentage at 25.0. Schultz is tied for the lead with 24 assists and leads the circuit with 17 power play points. The CCM/AHL Player of the Month for October and Rookie of the Month in November, Schultz has collected multiple points in 14 of 28 games. Schultz is third in the league in goals (16), 4 away from matching the rookie defenseman goal scoring record (20), set by John Slaney of Baltimore in 1992-93.
MORE SCHULTZ: Justin Schultz has points in 15 of the last 17 games, collecting 10 goals and 15 assists in that span. Schultz has been held off the scoresheet 4 times this season and in 3 of those the Barons were shut out. Schultz leads the Barons in the season series with Texas by scoring 5 goals and 1 assist.
SPECIALTIES: The Barons are No. 1 in overall power play percentage at 23.3, with 28 goals in 120 opportunities. The Barons are 5-for-14 on the man advantage vs. Texas.
