BARONS CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 4-3 OT WIN OVER IOWA
By George Darkow, OKC Barons on 04/18/2014
C.J. Stretch netted the game-winning goal in overtime as the Oklahoma City Barons clinched a berth in the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs by defeating the Iowa Wild 4-3 Friday night at the Cox Convention Center.
Trailing the Wild late by a score of 3-2, Oklahoma City’s Roman Horak scored the game-tying goal with just 2:01 left to play in the third period to force overtime. With the game tied at the end of regulation, the Barons picked up one standings point, which was enough to secure a playoff spot with earlier losses Friday by both Rockford and Charlotte.
Anton Lander assisted on all three Barons goals, with Andrew Miller having two assists on the night as well.
Oklahoma City got on the scoreboard twice late in the first period. The first goal came when Miller picked up a loose puck in the high Iowa slot and promptly tipped a pass to his left, where a trailing Austin Fyten whipped a wrist shot past Wild goalie Johan Gustafsson at 13:24 for a 1-0 Barons lead.
David Musil added the second Barons goal of the first period, receiving a Lander pass near the right circle and sending an upended puck through the legs of Gustafsson at 18:19 to put Oklahoma City in front 2-0.
Iowa found its stride midway through the second period. At 11:35 of the frame, Wild winger Brad Winchester sent a turnaround backhand pass to Tyler Graovac in the Barons’ slot who fired a shot past Bachman to cut the Barons’ lead to 2-1.
Thirty-nine seconds later, Graovac shuffled a pass from behind the Barons net to Jamie MacQueen who ripped a one timer from the left circle that snuck under Bachman to tie the game at two.
Iowa took the lead late in the third, when Graovac threw a centering pass that caromed off the skate of Barons defenseman Brandon Davidson to Iowa’s Kurtis Gabriel who chipped the puck past a sprawling Bachman to give the Wild a 3-2 lead at 15:08.
Horak’s game-tying goal came on Lander’s third assist of the game, and Stretch’s goal in overtime secured the win and two official standings points for the Barons.
