BARONS D-MAN BRYAN HELMER RECEIVES AHL PRESIDENT'S AWARD
By Josh Evans, OKC BaronsOklahoma City Barons defenseman Bryan Helmer received the President’s Award from the American Hockey League at the annual meeting of the Board of Governors at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
During the 2010-11 season, Helmer became the AHL’s top scoring defenseman and became just the seventh player in AHL history to play 1,000 games. A three-time Calder Cup champion, Helmer has signed to play with the Barons for the 2011-12 season. He is joined by forward Andrew Lord as two players signed by the Barons for the coming season.
Helmer was joined by the San Antonio Rampage organization as winners of the 2010-11 President’s Awards. The President’s Awards are given to an AHL organization for excellence in all areas off the ice, and to an AHL player in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the past year.
Other award winners included: Michael Mudd of the Worcester Sharks who received the James C. Hendy Memorial Award as the outstanding executive in the American Hockey League for the 2010-11 season; True North Sports & Entertainment chairman Mark Chipman who received the Thomas Ebright Award in recognition of career contributions to the AHL and Toronto Marlies director of business operations Mike Cosentino who was recognized with the Ken McKenzie Award for the most successful promotion of an AHL club during the 2010-11 season.
The Barons open their 38-game home schedule October 15 at the Cox Convention Center. Season ticket packages for the 11-12 season are still available by calling the Barons office at 232-GOAL.
