BARONS DEFEAT CHECKERS 4-3 IN OVERTIME
By Blake Colston, on 12/20/2011
One day after suffering a 3-2 shootout loss to the Charlotte Checkers, the Oklahoma City Barons rebounded with a 4-3 overtime victory over the same Charlotte club. Mark Arcobello scored the game-winner in overtime.
Just 28 seconds into overtime Gilbert Brule intercepted a pass from Charlotte’s Zach Boychuk deep inside the Checkers zone and fired a shot on goal. Checkers netminder Mike Murphy deflected the shot off his pads to the right of the net where Arcobello fired a shot over Murphy’s shoulder for the overtime game winner.
The brief overtime session was preceded by a first period that included five goals; three of which came within a span of 3:15. The final goal of the scoring flurry, a strong shot off the stick of Hunter Tremblay, put the Barons in front 3-2.
The Barons remained in the lead until 11:35 in the second when Jerome Samson found Jon Matsumoto who skated in and around the Barons defense to beat David LeNeveu glove side to even the game at three. The power-play score was Matsumoto’s 13th goal on the season.
The 4-3 win was Oklahoma City’s 13th by one goal, the most in the American Hockey League.
Ryan O’Marra added a short-handed goal and had an assist for OKC while David LeNeveu stopped 24 of 27 shots he faced.
The Barons take a week off for Christmas and return to the Cox Convention Center next Tuesday and Wednesday to face the Rochester Americans.
